Fire services are never an area for potential cost cutting. They will always have to meet BCA (Building Code of Australia) and are put in place to protect the lives of you and your staff!
When inspecting a potential new tenancy always request documentation from the leasing agent or property manager to show that the current layout meets current fire code regulations.
Usually you will have to make modifications to the existing sprinkler / smoke detector / emergency warning / exit and emergency light systems when designing a new office layout, but starting with a building that meets current code is a big cost saving.
